Our Story

A personal purpose. A shared journey.

The Ocean Project began with a desire to give back and grew through the people, hospitals and communities of Fiji. This is the story behind that continuing commitment.

Meet the founder

A mission born from gratitude

Born in rural India, Dr Balaji Kalband trained in neurology at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS), Bengaluru. His work included research on seizures and epilepsy in older adults, followed by clinical service in rural South India.

He moved to Australia for further specialisation, completed a Fellowship in Epilepsy at the University of Melbourne, and became a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP). The Ocean Project brings that clinical experience to a personal humanitarian commitment.

“Coming from humble roots, I have always believed I have been graced with far more than I deserved. The Ocean Project is my earnest attempt to give back to a world that deserves more.”

— Dr Balaji Kalband

The project is independent and personally funded by Dr Kalband. Local clinical relationships make it possible to provide care, share knowledge and return to communities over time.
