About the Ocean Project

What is the Ocean Project?

The Ocean Project is an independent, personally funded initiative founded by Dr Balaji Kalband. We bring specialist epilepsy care, education and follow-up to communities across Fiji, working alongside local healthcare teams.

Our approach

The PED approach

Provide. Empower. Develop. Three connected commitments, with people and communities at the centre.

Provide

Care where it is needed

Bring specialist consultations, evaluation, advice and follow-up closer to people with epilepsy. Help patients in need access free or subsidised medicines.

Empower

Knowledge shared locally

Help patients and families understand epilepsy and their care. Support local doctors, nurses and allied health professionals through education and practical training.

Develop

Care that continues

Strengthen local skills, relationships and services so epilepsy care can continue between visits. Build towards sustainable services in Fiji and, over time, the wider Oceania region.

Project Fiji

Local teams. A shared commitment.

Our work connects public hospitals, health centres and communities across Viti Levu. CWM Hospital in Suva is a central base, with Lautoka Hospital a continuing base in western Fiji. Clinics in other communities help bring care closer to home.

Fiji is the starting point. Our longer-term vision is to work with local partners across Oceania, building services that communities can sustain.
