About Epilepsy

Neurological diseases are common, access to neurological services not so. According to an estimate, over a fifth of patients presenting to any clinical services (outpatient, inpatient, emergency presentations) comprise of neurological ailments. This creates, even in the most developed of nations, a gap in the treatment and an unmet need that's ever rising.

Epilepsy is the most common serious disease of the brain. The burden of epilepsy accounts for 0.5% of the global burden of disease (compared with multiple sclerosis at 0.1% or breast cancer at 0.4%, or diabetes at 1.3%).

History Of Epilepsy

Epilepsy has left its mark on human history since ancient times. From the earliest recorded accounts, such as a description in Akkadian texts dating back to around 2000 BCE, where seizures were attributed to the influence of a Moon god, to references in the Code of Hammurabi around 1790 BCE, which recognized epileptic seizures as a valid reason for refund on a purchased slave, the condition has been documented across diverse cultures and civilizations. Throughout history, people with epilepsy have often faced stigma, discrimination, and misunderstanding. However, over time, advancements in medical knowledge and social awareness have led to greater understanding and support for individuals living with epilepsy. Today, efforts continue to improve treatment options, raise awareness, and promote inclusivity for those affected by this neurological disorder.
